MedX Lumbar Extension Device

MedX Lower Back Extension Machine at Home

At Converge Medical Technology, empathetic, multidisciplinary patient care for low back pain is achieved via a back machine conveniently located in a patient’s home.

While participating in the low back program, patients utilize the MedX lumbar extension device. Lumbar extension rehabilitation equipment is recommended by the Official Disability Guidelines (ODG) for low back conditions and may be used as a first line treatment option after back injury.

Registered with the FDA and having over 75 peer reviewed studies published, the MedX back device has been shown to reverse the low back muscle weakness (multifidus and erector spinae) that plagues patients after injury and prolongs their pain and disability.

Why the MedX Lumbar Extension Device Works for Low Back Conditions

The lumbar spine functions as the connection point between the upper and lower body. Because of this, the low back is susceptible to injury and it’s very difficult for patients to recover once injured. That's where the MedX machine comes in.

During most everyday movements, the large muscles in the hips contract to perform daily activities, while the low back muscles (i.e., multifidus and erector spinae) remain weak and inactive. This inactivity causes atrophy of the low back muscles that accelerates with injury. Atrophy of the low back impairs normal spinal function and increases injury risk.

Research shows that most low back injuries are the result of an overexertion to one of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments or discs) of the lumbar spine. When the soft tissues atrophy, their ability to protect from injury diminishes. This is why injury risk increases with age, repetitive movements and repeated injuries over time.

Lumbar deconditioning worsens with increased pain and repeated injuries over time as patients become fearful of movement and avoid using their low back, resulting in a downward spiral in strength and function.

The best way to help a patient who has had low back pain for long time is to help them restore their low back strength and range of motion to normal, which in turn, decreases pain and disability.

Considerable research has been conducted on the MedX back extension machine and its ability to stabilize the pelvis and isolate the low back muscles to drive results for patients. Stabilization of the pelvis is required to prevent the hip and leg muscles from being activated during rehab. Pelvic stabilization targets the low back muscles as the only muscle group being recruited during the movement. Pelvic stabilization and lumbar isolation optimally strengthens the low back to help patients recover from injury.

MedX Lumbar Extension Device After Surgery

At Converge Medical Technology, empathetic, multidisciplinary patient care for low back pain is conveniently achieved in a patient’s home.

Many patients referred to Converge Medical Technology are recovering from a lumbar spinal surgery or procedure. Their recovery is enhanced by using the MedX lower back extension machine because of its ability to improve the function of the multifudus muscles and improve flexibility. Circulation is also improved to help the lumbar discs heal.

Bringing the MedX device to the patient’s home after surgery is a great convenience that enhances results. Using MedX at home, increases consistency resulting in better patient results.

The MedX lumbar extension device helps patients recover from injury, reduce pain and disability, improve after spinal procedures and decrease future injury risk.

  • Decompression surgery
  • Medial branch block
  • Vertebroplasty
  • Kyphoplasty

Despite many new advancements in surgical methods and imaging technologies, the outcomes from low back operations are not guaranteed to be 100% successful. Many patients continue to have persistent symptoms after their low back surgery.

Patients with a history of chronic low back pain are known to have significant paraspinal muscle atrophy as compared to healthy individuals. And, after back surgery, low back strength and endurance are known to decrease by over 30%. This muscle atrophy contributes to poor surgical outcomes as weakness of the paraspinal muscles predisposes patients to further instability and dysfunction, leading to a high recurrence rate for low back pain after surgery.

Paraspinal muscle atrophy has considerable influence on surgical results. MedX is very effective at helping patients after lumbar spinal procedures because of its tremendous ability to reverse low back atrophy.

MedX machine therapies for the back increase the cross-sectional area of the paraspinal and multifidus muscles to reverse weakness. This increases lumbar muscle strength and power resulting in better results for patients.
